EXPLANATIONS OF EACH SEARCH BOX:

KEYWORD SEARCH | searches the title, subtitle, author, corporate author, responsibility, series, summary, subject, notes and special issues fields of the catalogue record.

AUTHOR | searches the author, corporate author and responsibility fields of the catalogue record.

TITLE OF BOOK OR JOURNAL | searches the title and subtitle fields of the catalogue record.

SUBJECT | searches the subject field which includes personal names, corporate names, film titles and television titles.

ISBN/ISSN | searches the ISBN and ISSN field of the catalogue record.

ABOUT THE CATALOGUE

The online catalogue of the AFI Research Collection includes records for :

  • all journals in the collection
  • all clippings files in the collection (files contain press clippings, stills and press kits)
  • all books acquired since 1997

Records in the card catalogue for books acquired pre-1997 are gradually being converted to the online catalogue. The subject headings and classification numbers used for the AFI Library collection are:

International index to film periodicals subject headings/ International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF)

FIAF classification scheme for literature on film and television (2nd ed.) / International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF)

CROSS-REFERENCES | Your search results may include a cross-reference. You can do another search by typing the information provided in the cross-reference into the search screen.

SUBJECT CROSS-REFERENCES | Cross-references are provided for subject headings so that you may use the correct or related terms to search.

* RT = related term
* NT = narrower term
* BT = broader term
* UF = used for
* USE = use

FILM TITLE CROSS-REFERENCES | Cross-references are also provided for film titles if the original title is in a language other than English as all films in our collection are indexed under the original language title. In this case, you MUST repeat your search for the ORIGINAL title. For example:
